Let's Go To Cambodia

KUM RIEP SUE!

Excitement is building around the Pinckley household. Debbie and I have committed to spend a month, in Cambodia, working with the Ship of Life (SOL), on the Mekong River. After a great deal of thought and prayer, we decided to be a part of this great work.

You gotta understand. I spent 40+ years dealing with high humidity. I ran to California to escape it. Debbie doesn’t like creepy, crawly things. Period. For us, roughing it is staying in a hotel without a breakfast buffet. WHAT ARE WE THINKING?!?!?! Well, we have been moved to go and make a difference. It began with a need to help. We weren’t sure who, but we knew that the Lord had something in mind for us. I watched an HBO documentary, named Red Light (http://www.redlightthemovie.com/). It dealt with the sex trafficking of young girls, in Cambodia. It was chilling. I read Somaly Mam’s book, The Road of Lost Innocence, which dealt with her life from childhood sex slavery to being a champion for these forgotten girls. Then, I read Not For Sale. I knew I had to make a difference. That is when I found out about SOL, and the great work they are doing for the people of Cambodia and the Kingdom of God. I read a great deal about the Khmer Rouge. I knew names and terms, but had never taken the time to learn the details. These horrors were inflicted, during my lifetime! Finally, I believe He led us to help with this great work. So there you have it. We will spend one month in a glorious adventure.

To learn more about SOL and Partners in Progress (the “parent” organization), you can check three YouTube videos. Part 2 tells about SOL.

I don’t want to give you the wrong view. The SOL has nice living quarters. We will not be sleeping with one eye open, watching for critters. Hey, the ship is even air conditioned --- but there are no midnight buffets; different kind of ship.

I am not sure how much we will help the people of Cambodia. But, I am confident they will help me. Maybe, I will have a different view about all my “stuff.” The Cambodians will help me to get outside myself; to get outside my comfort zone. Hey, isn’t that what Christianity is all about – living in a way that we are uncomfortable in this place.

There will be much more information here, when we begin this journey. In the meantime, say a prayer for us. Don't forget to pray against the creepy, crawly critters!
